Movie: The Field (D)

The Field is a tragic and difficult film. Bull McCabe is an Irish sharecropper whose family has been farming a certain field for generations. When the owner puts it up for auction, he expects no competition from his neighbors, because everyone agrees the field should be his. However, a development-minded American with deep pockets has other plans.

Of course, this movie is about much more than a piece of land. We see how Bull’s family is destroyed by his increasing obsession with owning the field. Sean Bean plays his son, a man torn between his father’s expectations and his own desires. This is not a feel-good movie, but is well worth seeing. Grade: B
